Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to further research mortality trends of the population of Southeastern Serbia. The question arises: is distinctiveness of the region reflected in differentiation of mortality from that in the republic as a whole? Comparative analysis places this region on the “mortality map” of Serbia with the accent on the process of cardiovascular transition. For this analyses the following indicators were used: standardized mortality rate, life expectancy at birth and infant mortality rate. A comprehensive effort is needed (prevention, health education, lifestyle change) on all levels in order to improve the existing situation. That is exactly why detailed demographic research of lower levels of administrative units is crucial to for further development of polices and directing of effort to bring down the mortality of specific age groups.
